On January 10th, a reporter from Shenzhen Commercial Daily learned from the Municipal Retail Trade Association that a recent survey titled “Shopping in Hong Kong†was conducted jointly by the association and Market Survey Co., Ltd. to better understand the shopping behavior of Shenzhen residents who travel to Hong Kong. The survey collected 2,029 valid responses, revealing key insights into the consumption habits of those who shop across the border.
The findings show that the majority of shoppers are high-skilled and high-income individuals. Among the goods purchased, clothing, leather goods, and bags were the most popular, with 71.11% of respondents buying these items during their trips. Digital products and cosmetics followed closely, with over 40% of shoppers purchasing them, while medicines accounted for 36.44%, and jewelry made up 20.89%.
Since 2010, more than 10% of Shenzhen consumers have visited Hong Kong or Chung Ying Street. Specifically, 11.41% of respondents had traveled to Hong Kong, with 10% going specifically for shopping and 2.21% visiting the Sino-British Street. Among those who frequently shopped in Hong Kong or on Chung Ying Street (11.41% of the sample), only 19.36% went at least once a month, while the majority—80.74%—shopped occasionally.
Interestingly, even those who regularly visit Hong Kong tend to spend most of their money within Shenzhen. Their purchases in Hong Kong are often limited to specific items, suggesting that shopping in Hong Kong is more of an occasional activity rather than a primary consumer habit.
The survey also highlighted income-based differences in shopping patterns. Those earning less than RMB 6,000 primarily bought everyday items, while those earning between RMB 6,001 and RMB 10,000 added more variety to their purchases. High-income individuals, however, were more likely to buy luxury goods such as designer clothing, accessories, and high-end electronics, in addition to their usual purchases.
Gender also played a role in shopping preferences. Women tended to buy more cosmetics, jewelry, and medicine, while men were more inclined to purchase digital products, wine, and tea. The survey further revealed that the main reasons for shopping in Hong Kong included lower prices, greater product variety, and higher trust in product quality, especially for luxury brands and children's products like milk powder.
Overall, the survey suggests that while “shopping in Hong Kong†remains a popular choice for certain groups, it is not a widespread or daily activity among Shenzhen residents. Instead, it serves as a supplementary form of consumption, driven by specific needs and preferences.
