Garment enterprises, especially those that place smaller orders but require high-quality, intricate craftsmanship. This shift is driven by the fact that such fabrics can generate profits several times or even tens of times higher than ordinary goods, making it a key trend in the textile industry.
At the start of the new year, Xia Rong, General Manager of Shaoxing Golden Beauty Textile Co., Ltd., has been extremely busy. Every day, customers come in for fabric samples, and contracts are signed every few days. However, this year is different—Xia Rong has started accepting "small lists," some as small as a few thousand meters, or even just a few hundred meters. As she explained, "Don't underestimate these small orders—they involve complex techniques and exquisite workmanship, often used for high-end clothing. The profit margins can be several times higher than regular products, sometimes even tenfold."
The reporter learned that factors like the rising U.S. dollar exchange rate, increasing raw material costs, and other uncertainties have made foreign trade orders riskier. Conventional products now face extremely tight profit margins, often measured in cents, putting pressure on textile companies. In contrast, the growing domestic demand has led many textile firms to shift their focus toward domestic fabric orders.
These domestic orders, although smaller in quantity and with more varied styles, are more profitable. Some projects offer profit margins as high as 50% or even 80%, which has made them very attractive. Zhejiang Yi Jin Textile Co., Ltd., a mid-sized textile company, has also made the transition from traditional products to "high, fine, small" business models. According to company officials, they now primarily target high-end domestic and international fashion brands. To better meet these demands, they established a new product development center and a brand department, focusing on creating fabrics tailored to specific brand requirements. Their newly developed fabrics are now well-received by both domestic and international fashion houses, leading to a steady increase in orders.
As one official put it, “Back when we were focused on conventional products, orders of tens of thousands of meters were common. But with low gold content and intense competition, profit was only a few cents per meter. Now, even though the order sizes are small, the prices are high, and once a new fabric is successfully developed, it can be recommended to multiple apparel companies, resulting in significant overall revenue.â€
Lee Sing Textile, a foreign trade-oriented enterprise in Keqiao, has also shifted its focus to the domestic market. Its main goal is now to serve garment companies. Despite not receiving major foreign orders last year, the company managed to secure several small deals with fashion houses in Shanghai and Ningbo, and the profitability remains strong. The company is now preparing to expand further in this direction.
According to an industry source, small orders require the same level of process as large ones, but with higher quality and technical standards. Large companies often avoid these due to the complexity, leaving the opportunity to small and medium-sized enterprises. These orders are often rare special requests, with lower chances of imitation and greater pricing control. Some fashion houses may even place slightly larger orders if they are satisfied with the performance of a supplier. Therefore, if a company can supply several fixed apparel companies, it can build a stable and profitable business.
