Disney's arrival in Shanghai has raised questions about how local animation companies will respond. Yesterday, a reporter contacted Guangdong Power Culture Communication Co., Ltd., the producer of "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf." Shao Haowen, director of the company’s propaganda department, revealed that "Pleasant Goat" is already planning to build its own theme park, which is currently under construction.
The competition in the domestic animation industry is expected to become fiercer with Disney's entry. Shao Haowen mentioned that the "father of Pleasant Goat," Lu Yongqiang, is currently abroad. He believes that Disney's influence is not something that happened overnight, and once it establishes itself in China, it will definitely intensify the competition.
While it's hard to accurately estimate the impact Disney will have, Shao Haowen said that the presence of international characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck could affect the pricing of domestic animation merchandise. However, the company remains confident in its future. Last year, some surveys showed that in certain regions, "Pleasant Goat" had a stronger image in children's minds than Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck.
Building its own theme park has always been the dream of Lu Yongqiang. The company is now conducting detailed assessments of the project, focusing on profitability and business models. Shao Haowen noted that as Disney enters the Chinese market, "Pleasant Goat" is also expanding overseas. For example, the show is being broadcast on MTV Children's Channel in Southeast Asia, reaching over 17 million Chinese-speaking viewers in the region. The company is now aiming for European markets.
"If you want to build a theme park, you can't just rely on two cartoon characters," Shao Haowen said. According to the company's plan, they will produce one or two animated series each year, with episodes ranging from 60 to 80, targeting different age groups. It is reported that the company is currently producing two new TV animations, "Little Heroes" (120 episodes) and "The Seven-colored Warriors" (52 episodes), both set to be released next year. On the 29th of this month, the second puppet show, "The Three Delights of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf," will premiere in Guangzhou.
Regarding the theme park, Shao Haowen did not disclose details about investment, scale, or funding sources. However, it is known that the park will include a cartoon doll stage show, game booths, amusement rides, and a family area, aiming to become a "children's Disney" paradise.
The company has considered multiple cities, including Guangzhou and Dalian, and according to current progress, it plans to open its first theme park in the northern market. This move marks a significant step in the company's long-term strategy to expand its brand beyond animation into immersive entertainment experiences.
