As someone who loves cozying up indoors during the winter, I can say that this season has been particularly chilly compared to our usual mild winters. With more time spent at home, indoor activities like playdates have become a regular occurrence. And with those playdates come opportunities for imaginative dress-up sessions. That's why I’m thrilled to share this fantastic DIY project inspired by Debbie, who came up with a brilliant way to repurpose one of her sewing patterns.
The result? An adorable doctor’s lab coat that's both functional and fun. Here's what Debbie had to say about creating it:
"I always aim to use fabrics that can withstand the wear and tear of imaginative play. For this lab coat, I salvaged a heavy cotton tablecloth that was no longer needed. It turned out to be the perfect material—sturdy yet soft enough for comfort. The Secret Agent Trench Coat pattern was ideal because it works well over multiple layers of clothing, even when paired with a jacket while pretending to make house calls."
Debbie added her own personal touches to the design. She decided on a single row of buttons instead of a double-breasted style and omitted the belt and sleeve tabs. To add a touch of realism, she created several large patch pockets and sewed a red cross onto one of them using felt. Using her embroidery machine, she personalized the coat with her child’s name.
