playtime: secret agent trench coat as a lab coat

I don’t think I’m alone in saying that this winter has felt particularly long and chilly. Unlike our typical mild winters, this season has kept us mostly indoors, which means more time spent on activities like playdates. As these playdates pile up, so does the need for new costumes, especially for imaginative games. And what better way to spark creativity than with something as fun as a doctor’s lab coat? Just look at how adorable this one turned out to be! ![LabCoat4](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/6e8526b73585289a0cb123cfa99d73c2.jpg) This brilliant creation came from Debbie, who cleverly repurposed one of our existing patterns. Let me share what she had to say about it: “Since all the dress-up outfits I make get heavily used—basically trashed—I try to avoid using expensive fabrics. For the lab coat, I used an old, heavy cotton tablecloth, and it worked perfectly. The Secret Agent Trench Coat pattern was ideal because it fits well over layers of clothing, even a jacket, which is great for outdoor pretend-play scenarios.” ![LabCoat3](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/1991ba5cb5065bcf0be5eab37796dbc4.jpg) She went on to explain that she made just a few adjustments to the pattern: instead of making it double-breasted, she opted for a single row of buttons and omitted some decorative details like the belt and sleeve tabs. She added several big patch pockets, one of which features a red cross made from felt. Using her embroidery machine, she personalized it with her name. If you’d like to learn more about this project or see additional pictures, head over to Debbie’s blog, Sewing Stash Challenge. A huge thanks to Debbie for sharing this fantastic idea! --- As someone who enjoys DIY projects, I’ve always loved the idea of turning everyday items into something creative and unique. This lab coat is a prime example of how repurposing materials can lead to something both functional and imaginative. Plus, it’s budget-friendly, which is always a bonus when it comes to kids’ activities. What struck me most about Debbie’s approach was her resourcefulness. Instead of buying new fabric, she salvaged an old tablecloth, giving it a second life. That kind of thinking aligns perfectly with the growing trend of sustainable crafting. It’s inspiring to see how simple tweaks to a pre-existing design can yield such impressive results. For those of you looking to try your hand at something similar, here’s a quick breakdown of the steps: 1. **Choose Your Fabric**: Opt for something durable yet easy to work with, like a sturdy cotton. 2. **Adjust the Pattern**: Modify the original design to suit your needs—whether it’s button placement or pocket design. 3. **Personalize It**: Add details like names or symbols to make it uniquely yours. 4. **Embellish**: Use patches, embroidery, or other embellishments to give it extra flair. Whether you’re planning a themed birthday party, encouraging imaginative play, or simply trying to keep your kids entertained during long winter days, this lab coat is sure to bring joy. Not to mention, it’s a great way to teach kids about sustainability and creativity! Let me know if you decide to take on this project. I’d love to hear how it turns out. Until then, stay cozy and keep those creative juices flowing! --- P.S. If you enjoyed this post, feel free to subscribe for more crafty ideas and tips. Happy sewing!
