Hygroscopic polyacrylate yarn processing method

A Dutch company studied the processing of a hygroscopic polyacrylate yarn. Ultra World Patent WO 01/06047 discloses this invention by Vepetex BV, Duerne.
Vepetex BV pointed out that polyacrylate fibers are particularly strong in water absorption. Such fibers can absorb more than 25 times their own weight. However, the fibers are fragile and easily damaged during processing. Therefore, it is usually necessary to form a yarn combination in the form of two kinds of fiber blends from a supporting fiber and increase the strength.

The patent suggests that polyacrylate fibers having a staple fiber length of more than 50 mm are used in the form of a blended sliver. For this purpose, carding of the rotor spinning rotor is provided.
During the carding process, these fibers will be damaged and shortened, and the resulting yarns will have a larger interface between the superabsorbent components. Moreover, the patent states that the shortening of the fibers has certain advantages, especially when used in medicine, since the fibers swell less when the fibers absorb a certain amount of liquid. In order to ensure the high absorption potential of the yarn, the inventors propose that the polyacrylate accounts for more than 50% of the total sliver.
The length of the staple fiber of the superabsorbent component should be shorter than the length of the support fiber: the patent indicates that the fiber length is more than 65% shorter than the length of the strong support component.
For processing into yarns, the polyacrylate and the supporting fibers are first blended in a mixing vessel. In this basic mixing process, care must be taken not to damage the polyacrylate component. The mixture is then converted into a sliver delivered to the opener of the rotor spinning frame. The air flow then sends the respective fibers to the can roller and the fibers are converted into twisted yarns.
Typically, such yarns are used in medicine and can also be used as a waterproofing component of cable engineering.
